BequestsLeave a Legacy to HMRI

Consider a bequest to breathe life into HMRI’s dreams. A bequest is a precious final gift that anyone can afford. We at HMRI are honored to be a trustee of such gifts of final and lasting charity. The significant impact of bequests since 1952 – both large and small – has helped shape HMRI today. Legacy gifts have provided us with critical funding for instrumentation and facilities that support innovative research to save and extend lives and to improve quality of life.

Do any of these statements apply to you?

  • It is important that the medical research of HMRI continues on after my passing
  • My family is already adequately provided for
  • I’d like to make a larger gift to HMRI and not alter my current lifestyle in any way
  • I’d like my name to continue to be associated with HMRI after my passing
  • I have no immediate family to provide for
  • I’d like some tax advantages in making a legacy gift to HMRI

If any of these apply, you may wish to consider planning now for a bequest. A bequest costs nothing now, yet it offers a great deal of satisfaction to know that a future gift will live on. Legacy giving allows you to pass assets directly to HMRI and provides flexibility for fulfilling wishes after your passing. Almost everyone has the ability to create a legacy gift, and for most people it is the largest gift they can make. You can designate your legacy gift for general support to HMRI or to a specific research area or disease.

Wills and Living Trusts

Bequests are traditionally made in a Will or Living Trust with the aid of a legal advisor and involve adding just a few sentences to a document. We encourage you to seek professional advice before making a legacy gift.

In any legal document, it is important that HMRI be clearly identified as Huntington Medical Research Institutes, a California 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a tax identification number of 95-1757119 and our address: 99 N. El Molino Ave., Pasadena, California 91101.

Types of Bequests

A bequest can be made in the form of cash, personal property, securities, real estate or a life insurance beneficiary designation. A “percent” bequest designates a percentage amount of an estate to HMRI. A “specific” bequest states a dollar amount or an item to HMRI in the estate. A “residual” bequest designates all or a certain percentage share of the rest, residue, and remainder of property to HMRI.

Please advise HMRI if you have already named us in a legal document or wish to name HMRI when you update your estate plan. We encourage you to let us know so that we can acknowledge your thoughtfulness and enroll you as a lifetime member of our Discovery Society.
