Dr. Castor obtained her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Ohio University in 2008 with magna cum laude honors. She then attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec to pursue her PhD in chemical biology under the supervision of Dr. Hanadi Sleiman. Her thesis was entitled “Transition metal complexes as G-quadruplex DNA binders,” and after a successful defense in April of 2014 she relocated to Pasadena and accepted the position of Analytical Biochemist at HMRI in the Molecular Neurology division.
She works closely with Drs. Michael Harrington and Alfred Fonteh to analyze metabolites in body fluids obtained from study participants involved in the Alzheimer’s studies using gas and liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry techniques. When she is not in the laboratory, Dr. Castor enjoys playing softball, equestrian sports, and a nice Cabernet. She is also an amateur tailor, specializing in custom-fitted men’s dress shirts.
