Summer 2024 High School STEM Program

Position: Teaching Assistant

Positions Available: 2

Dates: June 10-July 26, 2024

Hours: Two class sessions, morning session (9am-12pm) and afternoon session (1pm-4pm)

Hourly Rate: $16.93/hour

Program Background:

Current undergraduate students will work alongside a science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) instructor/teacher and serve as teaching assistants (TAs) for high school students enrolled in HMRI’s summer High School STEM program. The TAs will also serve as mentors, help the high school students gain insight into research methods/lab techniques, and supervise the high school students.

Summer Weekly Overview

• Week 0: June 10^th-June 14^th – TAs learn the curriculum and lab activities from the Teacher
• Week 1: June 17^th - June 21^st - Research Methods and Instrumentation
• Week 2: June 24^th – June 28^th - Anatomy (Brain, Heart, Lungs)
• Week 3: July 8^th - July 12^th (3-day week) - Pathology & Radiology
• Week 4: July 10^th - July 14^th - Genetics
• Week 5: July 15^th - July 19^th – Bioinformatics & Environmental Science
• Week 6: July 22^nd - July 26^th - Research Projects and Symposiums

We maintain a variety of scientific disciplines at HMRI, some of which include research on Alzheimer’s Disease, Migraine, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Cardiovascular laboratory-based research.

Requirements:

• Applicants MUST be current undergraduate students enrolled in an academic program or prospective Fall 2023 first-year graduate students (i.e. enrolled/accepted in a post-bacc, MS, or PhD)
• Applicants MUST be over 18 years of age.
• If selected for the teaching assistant position, teaching assistants are required to be at HMRI Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm in Pasadena, CA from June 17-July 26, 2024. Two class sessions, morning session (9am-12pm) and afternoon session (1pm-4pm)

Teaching Assistants will also have the opportunity to participate in focused scientific discussions (professional and academic seminars) that will allow them to better understand the scientific process.
