Title: Brain delivery of supplemental docosahexaenoic acid (DHA): A randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial
Date: July 17, 2020
Omega 3 supplements are lost from the brain in Alzheimer’s disease and it was not clear if oral supplements even reach the brain. This study with our colleagues at USC tested if high doses of omega-3 in the form of DHA caplets get into the spinal fluid. We found that high doses are needed to enter the brain fluid especially for individuals with the main genetic risk factor of ApoE-4. Follow on studies will test if this level of supplementation slows the loss of memory from early Alzheimer’s disease.
