How researchers, Pasadena schools partnered to study traumatic brain injuries in teen athletes

Meshia Paton wasn’t sure about her 15-year-old son playing football at Pasadena High School.
At that age, the other players hit pretty hard, she told him.
But now she has a little more peace of mind if her son gets hurt — she got a full scan of his brain and his heart from a program offered for free through a partnership between Pasadena Unified School District and the Huntington Medical Research Institutes.
It provides something to compare against in the event that her son, De’Shawn, is injured, and it didn’t cost her anything but time, she said.
