Dedicated Scientists with Unwavering Passion
Today, our work is laser-focused on innovative biomedical research to create a future world free from heart and brain disorders. Our diverse team of scientists come from all corners of the globe to bring their brilliant minds, exceptional talents, and unwavering passions together to solve the greatest medical challenges of the heart and brain – and the important connections between the two.
Culture of Innovation Leads the Way
Our culture of innovation at HMRI leads the way, embodying focused, revolutionary research and scientific discovery that is truly paradigm-shifting. As an independent institute, we have the freedom to move quickly and decisively, to follow our curiosity and ask important questions, uncertain where they may lead. This freedom allows our scientists to think creatively about complex diseases in new ways, exploring therapies that have the power to disrupt science and transform lives. It's this spirit of exploration and creativity that drives our work and inspires us to push the boundaries of what is possible in medical research.
Cardiovascular and Neurosciences Research
We focus our work in three core areas: cardiovascular research, clinical and translational neuroscience, and basic and translational neuroscience. Cardiovascular researchers are currently investigating ways to reduce the size and severity of heart attacks and strokes, including machine learning and treatment that could lower heart-related death and disease using a group of drugs, known as PDE-5 inhibitors. Our clinical and translational neuroscientists are on the frontier of diagnostic biomarkers in Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias to detect symptoms before they appear, ultimately leading to more effective treatments. Basic and translational neuroscientists are discovering previously unknown abnormalities in the developing brain that lead to mental health disorders later in life. At the intersection, researchers are gaining valuable insights into molecular mechanisms that lead to aging of the heart and brain.
Inspiring and Educating Future Generations
In addition to scientific discovery, education is a fundamental pillar that began at our inception. We are deeply committed to inspiring and educating the next generation of scientists who will continue the institution’s legacy in their pursuit of improving human health. Every year, we attract bright, intellectually curious postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate, and high school students who take part in our education programs, conducting research on the heart and brain alongside faculty mentors. This commitment to education is a testament to our belief in the power of knowledge and the importance of nurturing future scientific leaders.
Improving Health Outcomes
As an independent, non-profit medical research organization, HMRI has far-reaching implications in improving lives worldwide. Alzheimer’s disease, mental illnesses like schizophrenia, and cardiovascular diseases are pervasive and not completely understood or treatable. As we serve society through innovative basic, translational, and clinical outcomes, our research builds tangible hope for families, friends, and colleagues. By fearlessly pursuing science, our discoveries contribute to improved health and a future free from diseases that today affect millions of people.
