We Are an Independent Biomedical Research Institute
Our culture of innovation at HMRI leads the way, embodying focused, revolutionary research and scientific discovery that is truly paradigm-shifting. As an independent institute, we have the freedom to move quickly and decisively, to follow our curiosity and ask important questions, uncertain where they may lead. This freedom allows our scientists to think creatively about complex diseases in new ways, exploring therapies that have the power to disrupt science and transform lives. It's this spirit of exploration and creativity that drives our work and inspires us to push the boundaries of what is possible in medical research.
Our Mission
HMRI advances scientific discovery through innovative biomedical research to improve health outcomes and inspire the next generation of scientists.
Our Vision
By 2032, HMRI will be one of the leading independent biomedical research organizations in the United States by linking our scientific discoveries with improvements in human health.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
HMRI is deeply committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. We believe diversity drives innovation and celebrates multiple approaches and points of view. We strive to be inclusive in our approaches to our work and are committed to fostering a culture where differences are valued.
Our Values in Action
As a team, we commit to:
-
Innovate with Creativity
We use information, imagination and initiative to generate new ideas through our research, in which we incorporate creativity.
-
Collaborate for the Greater Good
We will work jointly toward a common goal by transferring knowledge among our peers and students in the spirit of advancing scientific discoveries.
-
Operate with Integrity and Rigor
We conduct our work with a high degree of thoroughness and thoughtfulness, and do so accounting to a moral code.
-
Work with Respect
We hold deep admiration for others’ abilities, qualities, and/or achievements. We honor others by exhibiting care, concern, and consideration for their needs or feelings.
-
Act with Accountability
We obligate ourselves to account for our activities, accept responsibility for them, and disclose the results in a transparent manner.
Transforming Lives Through Scientific Discovery
We focus our work in three core areas: cardiovascular research, clinical and translational neuroscience, and basic and translational neuroscience. Cardiovascular researchers are currently investigating ways to reduce the size and severity of heart attacks and strokes, including machine learning and treatment that could lower heart-related death and disease using a group of drugs, known as PDE-5 inhibitors.
Our clinical and translational neuroscientists are on the frontier of diagnostic biomarkers in Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias to detect symptoms before they appear, ultimately leading to more effective, equitable treatments. Basic and translational neuroscientists are discovering previously unknown abnormalities in the developing brain that lead to mental health disorders later in life. At the intersection, researchers are gaining valuable insights into molecular mechanisms that lead to aging of the heart and brain.
