STEM Instructor
The STEM Instructor will play a vital role in educating and mentoring these students and is responsible for executing an interactive, lab-based science curriculum with engaged and curious high school students. The curriculum requires the instructor to perform experiments using HMRI’s STEM lab space. The instructor can modify and expand upon the current curriculum with approval from the scientific director of Education. Two teaching assistants will support the instructor during the program. The STEM instructor reports directly to the director of scientific education and interfaces with other HMRI staff members.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

- Provides academic instruction to students through lecture, lab, or performance courses; assesses and develops cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher-order thinking skills among students through appropriate assignments and activities in the classroom.
- Advises and instructs students regarding program of study and effective study skills.
- Observes and evaluates student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations.
- Provides timely feedback on student inquiries in class, online, or during established consultation office hours.
- Plans and organizes instruction according to approved course outlines and student learning outcomes, maximizing student learning and aligning it with program goals.
- Maintains up-to-date and accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, course curriculum, and student learning outcomes.
- Prepares and submits data and reports on course and student progress promptly.
- May participate in curriculum and program development and offer feedback on student learning outcomes.
- Fosters a safe, healthy, supportive, and collaborative learning environment for students.
- Maintains current knowledge of the evolving fields of science and STEM education theory, along with hands-on and inquiry-based education, as well as other relevant educational philosophies, and uses this knowledge to continue developing and enhancing the education program.
- Must possess sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of underserved high school students.
- The STEM instructor also carries out a variety of job duties as assigned and requested.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- 3+ years’ experience teaching science
- Bachelor's degree required; preference given to those with an advanced degree
- Experience in working and teaching in a laboratory is highly preferred
- A passion for science education
- A deep sense of professionalism
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively
- Exceptional computer skills are required. Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) is necessary.
- Sound judgment and decision-making capability
- Must be a reliable and conscientious self-starter, with excellent attention to detail and ability Excellent written and oral communication skills to coordinate multiple projects and deadlines
- Ability to cultivate and sustain strong relationships with colleagues, fostering respect, consensus, and trust across reporting lines.
