Celebrating 70 Years of Mentorship
Celebrating 70 Years of Mentorship: HMRI Welcomes Its Largest Summer Education Cohort Yet
This summer marks a special milestone for HMRI’s education programs — not only are we welcoming our largest summer cohort to date, but we’re also celebrating 70 years since our faculty first opened their labs to aspiring young scientists.
What began in 1955 as a bold investment in the next generation of biomedical researchers continues stronger than ever. Today, that legacy thrives through 17 undergraduate students and 24 high school scholars who are spending their summer immersed in hands-on research at HMRI.
A Summer of Discovery
Each student is paired with leading investigators in neuroscience and cardiovascular science, including Drs. Arakaki, Fonteh, Kloner, Purcell, and Vasudevan. These scholars are conducting independent research projects while learning experimental techniques, contributing to real-time discoveries, and building the foundation for future careers in science and medicine.
Undergraduate students come to HMRI from a diverse range of institutions, including:
- Biola University
- Cal State Los Angeles
- Los Angeles Trade Tech College
- Dickinson College
- Mount Saint Mary's University
- Mt. San Antonio College
- Occidental College
- Pasadena City College
- UC Berkeley
The high school scholars — rising juniors and seniors from the Pasadena Unified School District — connect local youth with cutting-edge, mentored laboratory experiences, building intellectual curiosity and confidence in their research skills.
Join Us at Science Day
HMRI invites the community to meet these exceptional students and hear about their summer research at our 3rd Annual Science Day, taking place:
