Spotlight on Innovation: Join the 2025 Science Day Panel at HMRI

At HMRI, we believe that science doesn't just shape the future — it reflects the values of the communities behind it. As part of our 3rd Annual Science Day, we're proud to present a special panel discussion at noon on Wednesday, July 23, exploring the vibrant intersection of science, education, civic leadership, and Pasadena's legacy of innovation.

This year's theme is especially meaningful. In 2025, we celebrate 70 years of biomedical research and education at HMRI, rooted in a city that has long been a cradle of discovery — from Caltech and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to public schools and community institutions that invest in the next generation.

A Conversation Across Generations of Leadership

Moderated by Dr. Julia Bradsher, president & CEO of HMRI, the panel brings together a remarkable group of leaders with deep ties to Pasadena, science and education. Several of the panelists began their journeys at HMRI as student researchers — proof of the long-lasting impact of mentorship and early exposure to scientific careers.

Meet the Panelists:

  • Dr. Warren Brown
Physician, entrepreneur, and founder of Proactive Care Partners. A former VP of Whole Foods, he got his start as an HMRI intern in 1993.

  • Baxton Chen
Aspiring physician and advocate for health equity and STEM education. A former HMRI student and teaching assistant, Baxton recently completed his master's at Stanford.

  • Dr. Michele Kipke
USC professor, pediatric researcher, and longtime member of the South Pasadena School Board, where she's championed education and community health for over a decade.

  • David Klug
Economic Development Director for the City of Pasadena. David brings insight into innovation ecosystems, workforce development, and the future of life sciences in our region.

  • Dr. Ashwini Lakshmanan
Pediatrician, educator, and national expert in perinatal health equity. A 1998 HMRI alumn, she now serves as associate professor at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine.

Why this Conversation Matters

This panel explores questions that resonate across generations:

  • What makes Pasadena such a magnet for scientific discovery?
  • How do we ensure the next generation of students has access to opportunities in STEM?
  • What does resilience look like in institutions and communities?
  • How can cities, schools, and research institutions work together to drive meaningful change?

As Dr. Bradsher notes, "Innovation is only as strong as the communities it serves." This conversation is an invitation to reflect on our shared history — and to envision the future we can build, together.
