Abstract

Patients with hypertension often have other comorbidities, such as heart failure, diabetes, or CKD, that can complicate their clinical management. Controlling BP in these patients is key to reducing their overall risk for morbidity and mortality. Current recommendations indicate which classes of antihypertensive agents are appropriate for patients with cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic comorbidities. The recommendations are based on prospective, randomized clinical trials in specific patient populations that evaluated several classes of antihypertensives, including beta-blockers, ARBs, ACE inhibitors, and CCBs, administered as monotherapy or in various combinations. These cases illustrate the application of clinical trials evidence to the management of hypertension in clinical practice.
